THE HISTORY of CAPTAIN MEY'S INN

Captain Mey's Inn Cape May Bed and Breakfast Inn

A turn-of-the-century Victorian inn (c.1890)

Namesake: Captain Cornelius J. Mey, Dutch discoverer of Cape May, New Jersey.

The inn itself was built around 1890 by Dr. Walter H. Phillips, a homeopathic physician and Cape May native.  Today the inn is named after Captain Cornelius J. Mey.  This Dutch sea captain explored the East Coast in 1621, sailing the Good Tidings on behalf of the Dutch West India Company.  Like many Cape May visitors today, Captain Mey found the area charming.  He and other Dutch explorers declared that the climate of the Delaware was "like that of Holland" – as good as home.  Captain Mey confirmed that compliment when he gave his name to these shores.
